After her husband’s death, Ms. Zundel was forced to confront hard truths such as the marriage might have been emotionally abusive and that it affected her sons more than she was aware. Emotional Home is both a reckoning with her past and a letter to her sons, showing that change is always possible, and from fractured upbringings, forgiveness and resilience can create a true emotional home, even with adult children.

Claudia Zundel is a writer, consultant, and former director in behavioral health with over three decades of experience working in mental health, substance use prevention, and youth development. As a lifelong social worker, she has led statewide initiatives, developed prevention programs, and consulted with nonprofits and government agencies. She is recognized as one of the pioneering leaders in early childhood mental health. She specialized in programs serving families, children, and youth. The irony of the memoir is that while she served others, her own family was in turmoil. This is her first published book, although she has published professional articles in magazines and journals. She currently lives in the foothills of Denver, Colorado, with her amazing cat, Isabelle, and maintains healthy relationships with her two adult sons.

He is one of the featured men in the award-winning documentary The Good Soldier. Mr. Wood was a guest lecturer at the peace studies program at Colorado College and Regis University’s Study of the War Experience program. He was badly wounded in WWII and was a city planner before turning to writing full time in the 1980s.

One Day tells the inspirational story of how Bahati surmounted a frightening series of obstacles and found safe haven in the United States thanks to its refugee resettlement program. He shows how we underestimate refugees to our own disadvantage, and that we must never give up on ourselves or each other, but always strive to create justice.

Shadows of the Past is a dual memoir written in two parts. First by a German SS Officer, and second by Annita Rodgers, his oldest daughter, born in France to her French Mother and German SS Father. Discovering her father’s manuscript many years later, Annita, who is trilingual, translated it from its original German into English. This is not a typical WWII Memoir but rather the saga of a family from two different countries during an impossible time in history.

As a daughter of a Nazi SS, Annita Bosse Rodgers grew-up in Eastern France, the Province of Lorraine. It was at the height of World War II and her province was then under German rules. As the daughter of a French woman and an SS soldier, she suffered throughout her early years of rejection, abuse and shame. At age 22, she married an American Soldier and followed him to the U.S. with her seven-month-old baby girl. Another baby girl was born six years later. Annita became an American citizen in 1967. Today, re-married for a second time, she lives with her husband in Denver, Colorado. The publishing of her father’s memoirs and her own, is the history of suffering of divided families and countries.

The back cover copy you write for your book is among the most important marketing messages you’ll craft. It’s the essence of your book’s most exciting features, distilled into a few hundred words. It typically serves as the foundation for your online book descriptions, as well as any press releases or pitches you make to the media. It will get re-used and re-fashioned for dozens of purposes. Whatever labor you expend on perfecting it will reward you in the long run.

Here are the key principles that publishers and authors alike use to create what should become a masterpiece of your book marketing and an essential piece of your book metadata.

Back Cover Copy for Nonfiction (Non-Narratives)

The most important question you must answer in your back cover copy is: Why and how will the reader benefit from this book? If you know your audience well, then you know the problems they face; your back cover copy should tell how your book addresses these problems head on and helps readers overcome a challenge or succeed.

Two of the most common mistakes that nonfiction authors make in crafting their back cover is:

Focusing too much on a description of the book’s content, rather than how the content will help, inform, or entertain the reader
Focusing too much on the author’s background, rather than how the author’s credentials or experience helps them expertly address the subject matter

Rather than crafting copy that’s a long, solid block of text, you can help ensure the copy is read by including (in this order):

A headline at the top of the cover that succinctly sums up the key benefit or selling point of the book—or consider a convincing quote (blurb) from a recognizable authority who recommends the book
About a 100-200 word summary that expands upon the headline and demonstrates the value of the book
A bullet list of features and benefits the book provides to readers
A final sentence or two to close the message, with a mention of the author’s credentials if not earlier described
(optional) Praise (blurbs) for the book from recognizable authorities
(optional) A brief author bio and author photo at the bottom of the cover

A professional designer can work wonders in arranging this information in a way that helps it get read, especially if you have a range of elements you’re trying to assemble (description, blurbs, bio, photo, awards, and so on).

Back Cover Copy for Fiction (and Nonfiction Narratives)

It’s not uncommon for traditional publishers to put nothing but blurbs or book reviews on a novel’s back cover, especially if it’s by an author who is already well-known. But that’s rarely the best strategy for authors who don’t already have an established audience. Potential readers will want to know what the story is about before committing, and the hook you provide may determine whether they start reading the first page or chapter. (The same is true of memoir and other true-to-life stories.)

The hook for the back cover isn’t so different from the hook you’d put in a query letter to a literary agent. The hook needs to convey:

Who is the main character(s)?
What do they most deeply desire?
What stands in the way?
What is the setting or context for the story?

If you can’t identify what the main character deeply desires, then ask: What challenge do they face? What sets their story in motion?

Ultimately, what you’re trying to get across is an intriguing story premise. For example, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult tells the story of 13-year-old Anna, who was born as a “savior sister” specifically so she can save her older sister’s life. When Anna turns 13, she is told that she will have to donate one of her kidneys, and she sues her parents for medical emancipation.

That length of description is all you need to sell the story to potential readers. To improve your own story description, read the book marketing copy for dozens (even hundreds) of books in your genre, and pay attention to length, point of view or voice, as well as how much of the story is described. For example, it’s very popular for contemporary romance novel descriptions to be written from the point-of-view of the heroine. Here’s how the book marketing copy for Baller by Vi Keeland starts:

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men’s locker room.
It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.
The famed quarterback decided to bare all.
And by all, I don’t mean he told me any of his secrets.
No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.

In those 60 words, we know who the main character is, a good idea of what she desires (or will desire!), and what her challenge will be. We also know the setting or context.

No matter what category or genre your book falls into, you have to pack a lot of punch into a couple hundred words, sometimes less. Don’t just write one version and consider it done. Write multiple versions, test and gather feedback, and improve it until you feel it’s the best possible sales piece for your book.

Journey Institute Press Signs Children’s Book Author & Illustrator

Denver, CO: December 19, 2021, Curious Adventures Publishing, an imprint of Journey Institute Press, today announced it has acquired the World English Rights to a children’s book written by Andrea Gelfuso (author of My Modena: A Year of Laughter, Fear, and Exhilaration in Italy, August 2021, from Storytellers Publishing) and illustrated by writer and artist Lindy Olson.

Journey Institute Press Publisher, Michael Jenet, commenting on the upcoming publication said: “We are thrilled to be partnering once again with author Andrea Gelfuso bringing her wit and creative writing to this wonderful story and we are equally as excited to be working with Lindy Olson who captures the story so wonderfully with her beautiful illustrations. We can’t wait to introduce the world to Zoe the zebra and her friends.”

When she is not writing, Andrea Gelfuso is Innovative environmental and natural resources law professional and advocate for social and environmental justice. This will be her second published book with Journey Institute Press and her first children’s book.

Lindy Olson is a writer, editor, and teacher with more than 20 years of experience in internal and external communications. She is also an artist with a wonderful talent for capturing animals in her illustrative mediums. This is her first book as an illustrator.

Denver, CO: July 26, 2022, Curious Adventures Publishing, an imprint of Journey Institute Press, today announced it has acquired the World English Rights to the heartwarming children’s book from first time author Jasmine Castigliano and illustrator Hannah Nordman.

Bodhi (pronounced / bOh-dee /) Cheetah Always Wins walks the reader through a day in the life of Bodhi whom everyone wants to race and prove they are faster than the fastest animal in the Savannah. Exploring the principle of Bodhicitta and through the magic of kindness, we see that even though Bodhi Cheetah never actually crosses the finish line, she always wins.

POET LAUREATE COLLECTION

Denver, CO: October 14, 2022, Word Binders Publishing, an imprint of Journey Institute Press, today announced it has acquired the World English Rights to a collection of poetry from Ashley Cornelius, the Colorado Pikes Peak Region Poet Laureate. As a nationally recognized spoken word poet Ms. Cornelius’ poetry focuses on her intersectionality as a black woman, social injustice, and self-love. Her work is unapologetic and aims to disrupt and cause people to get uncomfortable and, in the process, grow.

Ashley Cornelius is a nationally recognized, multi-award-winning spoken word poet. Her focus is on healing herself and her community with her artistic expression. A trained workshop facilitator, host, and event organizer as well as a therapist, she is known for her workshops on poetry, self-care, body neutrality, racial injustice, anti-blackness, mental health stigma, and ancestral healing. As a therapist, she believes mental health is paramount and poetry and performance are a way to support mindfulness and coping skills. Ashley has worked with youth across her career in multiple roles as a teacher, mentor, therapist, coach, and program director for a youth arts nonprofit. She is dedicated to supporting healing, growth, and radical self-acceptance through poetry.
