Shadows of the Past

A Memoir

Denver, CO: October 11, 2024, Storytellers Publishing, an imprint of Journey Institute Press, today announced it has acquired the World English Rights to Shadows of the Past, a dual memoir by Annita Rodgers.

Shadows of the Past is a dual memoir written in two parts. First by a German SS Officer, and second by Annita Rodgers, his oldest daughter, born in France to her French Mother and German SS Father. Discovering her father’s manuscript many years later, Annita, who is trilingual, translated it from its original German into English. This is not a typical WWII Memoir but rather the saga of a family from two different countries during an impossible time in history.

Journey Institute Publisher, Michael Jenet, commenting on the upcoming publication, said: “This is not the usual story of a German SS Officer or World War II memoir. It is a story that doesn’t get told in the annals of history. A story of a family from two different countries and cultures, and from two vastly different perspectives of hardship and heartbreak and, ultimately, of resilience and hope. As a daughter of a Nazi SS, Annita Bosse Rodgers grew-up in Eastern France, the Province of Lorraine. It was at the height of World War II and her province was then under German rules. As the daughter of a French woman and an SS soldier, she suffered throughout her early years of rejection, abuse and shame. At age 22, she married an American Soldier and followed him to the U.S. with her seven-month-old baby girl. Another baby girl was born six years later. Annita became an American citizen in 1967. Today, re-married for a second time, she lives with her husband in Denver, Colorado. The publishing of her father’s memoirs and her own, is the history of suffering of divided families and countries.

Dr. Morrison is the only person of any race or gender to serve in top positions in all three branches of the US government. She served the Reagan administration as associate director of the White House Office of Public Liaison; she made history becoming the first woman and first Black Officer to serve as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate; and she headed the Fair Employment Practices Office and served as Senior Legal and Policy Advisor at the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.

When he was twelve months old, David Last was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. He has undergone eight surgeries, multiple types of therapy; physical, occupational, and psychological in one form or another since the age of three. Despite the multiple challenges living with Cerebral Palsy has created in his life, he did his best to look for the brighter side of every challenge he faced and tried his hardest to learn and grow from every experience. Forged by Limitations is a book filled with everything he learned and appreciated about life despite the obstacles he had to overcome.

In it he recounts the struggles and triumphs of living with C.P. and his hope is that by sharing his story he can inspire others.

Beginning in 1992 as the Executive Director of the Miami Food Bank and went on to work for Feeding America in Chicago, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization. He was responsible for developing national programs designed to obtain more food for the 205-member food banks across the United States. In 2009, he was named Central Floridian of the Year by the Orlando Sentinel.

The back cover copy you write for your book is among the most important marketing messages you’ll craft. It’s the essence of your book’s most exciting features, distilled into a few hundred words. It typically serves as the foundation for your online book descriptions, as well as any press releases or pitches you make to the media. It will get re-used and re-fashioned for dozens of purposes. Whatever labor you expend on perfecting it will reward you in the long run.

Here are the key principles that publishers and authors alike use to create what should become a masterpiece of your book marketing and an essential piece of your book metadata.

Back Cover Copy for Nonfiction (Non-Narratives)

The most important question you must answer in your back cover copy is: Why and how will the reader benefit from this book? If you know your audience well, then you know the problems they face; your back cover copy should tell how your book addresses these problems head on and helps readers overcome a challenge or succeed.

Two of the most common mistakes that nonfiction authors make in crafting their back cover is:

Focusing too much on a description of the book’s content, rather than how the content will help, inform, or entertain the reader
Focusing too much on the author’s background, rather than how the author’s credentials or experience helps them expertly address the subject matter

Rather than crafting copy that’s a long, solid block of text, you can help ensure the copy is read by including (in this order):

A headline at the top of the cover that succinctly sums up the key benefit or selling point of the book—or consider a convincing quote (blurb) from a recognizable authority who recommends the book
About a 100-200 word summary that expands upon the headline and demonstrates the value of the book
A bullet list of features and benefits the book provides to readers
A final sentence or two to close the message, with a mention of the author’s credentials if not earlier described
(optional) Praise (blurbs) for the book from recognizable authorities
(optional) A brief author bio and author photo at the bottom of the cover

A professional designer can work wonders in arranging this information in a way that helps it get read, especially if you have a range of elements you’re trying to assemble (description, blurbs, bio, photo, awards, and so on).

Back Cover Copy for Fiction (and Nonfiction Narratives)

It’s not uncommon for traditional publishers to put nothing but blurbs or book reviews on a novel’s back cover, especially if it’s by an author who is already well-known. But that’s rarely the best strategy for authors who don’t already have an established audience. Potential readers will want to know what the story is about before committing, and the hook you provide may determine whether they start reading the first page or chapter. (The same is true of memoir and other true-to-life stories.)

The hook for the back cover isn’t so different from the hook you’d put in a query letter to a literary agent. The hook needs to convey:

Who is the main character(s)?
What do they most deeply desire?
What stands in the way?
What is the setting or context for the story?

If you can’t identify what the main character deeply desires, then ask: What challenge do they face? What sets their story in motion?

Ultimately, what you’re trying to get across is an intriguing story premise. For example, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult tells the story of 13-year-old Anna, who was born as a “savior sister” specifically so she can save her older sister’s life. When Anna turns 13, she is told that she will have to donate one of her kidneys, and she sues her parents for medical emancipation.

That length of description is all you need to sell the story to potential readers. To improve your own story description, read the book marketing copy for dozens (even hundreds) of books in your genre, and pay attention to length, point of view or voice, as well as how much of the story is described. For example, it’s very popular for contemporary romance novel descriptions to be written from the point-of-view of the heroine. Here’s how the book marketing copy for Baller by Vi Keeland starts:

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men’s locker room.
It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.
The famed quarterback decided to bare all.
And by all, I don’t mean he told me any of his secrets.
No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.

In those 60 words, we know who the main character is, a good idea of what she desires (or will desire!), and what her challenge will be. We also know the setting or context.

No matter what category or genre your book falls into, you have to pack a lot of punch into a couple hundred words, sometimes less. Don’t just write one version and consider it done. Write multiple versions, test and gather feedback, and improve it until you feel it’s the best possible sales piece for your book.

October 10, 2022, Storytellers Publishing, an imprint of Journey Institute Press, today announced it has acquired the World English Rights to Wasn’t Expecting This, the journey of a mother with breast cancer who discovers her son also has a brain tumor by author Adina Ciment. In this incredible book, Adina assembles a collection of her reflections and philosophy that explores the changing roles she juggled – mother, patient, and caretaker – and her ultimate discovery of herself as a strong and powerful woman.

Journey Institute Press Publisher, Michael Jenet, commenting on the upcoming publication said: “It’s one thing to come to grips with the reality of a personal cancer diagnosis. It’s a completely different thing to then learn that your son has one too. This book not only takes us along on the incredible journey of two brave people, but allows us to learn, reflect, and grow alongside them as well. Adina Ciment is a writer and educator from South Florida where she lives with her husband and five children. After teaching High School English for 30 years, she started The Raven Writing Company, a private tutoring company. Her essays have appeared on HuffPost, Kveller, Tailslate, and Aish.Com and she has been a keynote speaker for various non-profit organizations. Wasn’t Expecting This is her first book.

POET LAUREATE COLLECTION

Denver, CO: October 14, 2022, Word Binders Publishing, an imprint of Journey Institute Press, today announced it has acquired the World English Rights to a collection of poetry from Ashley Cornelius, the Colorado Pikes Peak Region Poet Laureate. As a nationally recognized spoken word poet Ms. Cornelius’ poetry focuses on her intersectionality as a black woman, social injustice, and self-love. Her work is unapologetic and aims to disrupt and cause people to get uncomfortable and, in the process, grow.

Journey Institute Press Publisher, Michael Jenet, commenting on the upcoming publication said: “Ashley Cornelius is a force to be reckoned with. Her poetry is powerful. Her work in the community is amazing. Her multi-award-winning artistry and the commitment to her community through her work both as an artist and a professional is awe inspiring. Ashley Cornelius is a nationally recognized, multi-award-winning spoken word poet. Her focus is on healing herself and her community with her artistic expression. A trained workshop facilitator, host, and event organizer as well as a therapist, she is known for her workshops on poetry, self-care, body neutrality, racial injustice, anti-blackness, mental health stigma, and ancestral healing. As a therapist, she believes mental health is paramount and poetry and performance are a way to support mindfulness and coping skills. Ashley has worked with youth across her career in multiple roles as a teacher, mentor, therapist, coach, and program director for a youth arts nonprofit. She is dedicated to supporting healing, growth, and radical self-acceptance through poetry.
